If the stones of the church of Waterlandkerkje could talk... The history of this lovely village contains a violent story that is reminiscent of the wooden statue in front of the church. It was erected for the pastor Johannes Steuerbaudt, who was murdered in 1668. A few kilometers to the south he had preached in Stroopuit. The Catholics saw this as a provocation, because they considered the hamlet to be part of their territory. Enraged with rage, they dragged the pastor from his pulpit and lynched him.
