On a beautiful estate, near Renesse, on about 45 hectares of land, you will discover "Landgoed Moermond". It was founded around 1229 by Constantijn van Zierikzee.
The most famous residents are undoubtedly Jan van Renesse (a personal friend of Floris de V.) and Witte van Haamstede. The castle was destroyed twice by battles, but rebuilt again and again.
After the flood disaster of 1953, a thorough restoration in 1955 brought the castle back to its original state. Since the construction of the Storm Surge Barrier in the Eastern Scheldt, the Castle has been used as a conference centre that the business community and the government like to use.
