De toren werd gebouwd in de 15e eeuw als onderdeel van het verdedigingssysteem van Saint‑Tropez. De stad had vier torens: Tour du Portalet, Tour Vieille, Tour Jarlier en Tour Suffren.
De toren diende als uitkijkpost en artilleriepost om zeeaanvallen en piraterij af te weren. De toren heeft een zeldzame vijfhoekige basisvorm, ontworpen om kanonskogels beter af te weren en schoten in meerdere richtingen mogelijk te maken.
De naam komt van “portalet”, wat “kleine poort” betekent. Er was vroeger een kleine stadsingang (poort) direct naast de toren naar de oude visserswijk La Ponche.
Vanaf de toren heb je zicht op de verborgen Plage de la Glaye en Plage de la Ponche – twee idyllische strandjes tussen de rotsen, geliefd bij locals.
