Putberg is located west of Asse, which has a rich past as a junction of Roman roads, including the heerbaan to Bavay. Numerous excavations and defensive structures can still be found in the landscape. In the hamlet of Kalkoven the remains of a Roman lime kiln and a vicus were found. Asse has been a junction of important roads to Aalst, Ghent, Dendermonde, Merchtem-Mechelen, Vilvoorde, Brussels and Enghien for more than 200 years. The structure of the landscape has changed little since the end of the 18th century.
