A first provisional wooden station in Stene was opened in 1838 as the terminus of the Brussels-Mechelen-Ostend line.
In 1866, however, this was expanded to have a better connection with the port for passengers and goods.
In 2012, a major reform project, "Station by the Sea", began, which renewed the area surrounding the station. The adjacent bus and tram stop was also renovated. On the square in front of the station there is a sculptural group “Fishermen”.
